All my life, I had been interested in
being able to provide care to individuals. But as I conquered the world of
nursing, I feel like disillusioned and about to leave what I have started even
though that I knew that I want to do something in the medical field. After
learning Watson’s theory of caring and feeling supported to take time, I became
hopeful and decided to stay. Everyday I’m challenged by many different concepts
to analyze and understand. But within this theory I was assigned to, I was
enlightened that “I can do it”. Despite such hardships I will encounter, I
found myself willing to conquer it all.
Such questions like; “How do I express
my caring consciousness and commitment to the persons and their families?” “How
do I make a difference in people’s life and suffering?” Through Watson’s caring
theory, I was inspired to provide a meaningful caring practice.
Being informed by Watson’s caring
theory, it made me realized that humans are holistic. Showing care and love to
humans (soon to be our patients) are the most universal, the most tremendous
and it is also the essence of nursing and the unifying focus for nursing
practice. With that, If I am already in a nursing situation, I should be more
caring and loving to nourish my humanity and live together.
I am very much thankful to this theory
that as a beginning, I have to impose my own will to care and love upon my own
behaviour and not to others. It explained a lot that I have to treat myself
first with gentleness and dignity before I can respect and care for others with
gentleness and dignity as well.
To practice nursing like
Watson wanted, it does not take much time; it simply takes a caring heart, soft
hands, and an open mind to enhance the healing process of patients and their
families.
